Many thanks to my Dad for compiling the following recommendations, complete with annotations.
The following suggestions are chosen for a combination of locals’ suggestions, historic reputation, and Yelp recommendations:
Its nomenclature refers to the obvious grand facade.
It has a classic lounge, with small-plate kitchen selections, and it has acoustic music in the lounge on some nights.
Supposedly the sister hotel to the Columns.
It also has a highly recommended bar, and a breakfast restaurant, The Flour Moon.
A boutique hotel with 14 rooms.
Has an acclaimed indoor/outdoor bar and restaurant.
Above a popular Tex-Mex restaurant, Superior Grill.
It apparently has available parking (which may even be free).
Technically a block off of St. Charles Ave,
and about a block from The Ponchartrain.
18 rooms with high praise online.
For those who have always wanted to stay in the French Quarter, here are three suggestions for large, high-rise, full-service hotels:
In the heart of the Quarter.
Offers a famous rotating bar
(which might not be favorable after a few cocktails).
Valet parking.
Don’t let them book you near an elevator!
Atop the Canal Place Mall,
which has a huge parking garage.
Valet parking is also available.
Right on the Mississippi River;
It likely has the best views of New Orleans.
Ask for a room with windows facing downriver,
and you get a seagull-level panorama of the Quarter.
Rooftop pool.
3 blocks from the Quarter,
but centrally located with lots of nearby restaurants
in the Central Business District and Warehouse District.
The huge Caesar’s Casino is about a block away.
Valet parking.
New Orleans is like Nashville or Austin: Lots of music venues offering live music nightly.
Probably the highest concentration of clubs is on and around Frenchman Street, in the Marigny neighborhood, just across Esplanade Avenue at the rear of the French Quarter.
Right off Esplanade Street.
Artsy, hipster-type vintage place,
with an interior courtyard with pool and hot tub.
Ask for a room away from the street,
unless you need NYC levels of noise to sleep.
In the heart of the Marigny.
Convenient to music and the Quarter,
and faces a block-size park.
Both bar and hotel get high praise
from locals and online reviews.
This is actually in the Quarter,
a block from Esplanade Street,
but convenient to both the Quarter
and Frenchman Street.
Strictly for the adventurous traveler.
Small, unique rooms with private baths and courtyards,
with a hot tub that may work.
On-street parking.
Authentic New Orleans.
